Some Arctic and Subarctic Solitary Bees Collected at Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, Nwt, Canada (Hymenoptera: Apoidea)

Abstract: Can. Ent. 118: 395405 (1986) Nine species of solitary bees are recorded from a northern area of Northwest Territories: Osmia inermis from tundra at Tuktoyaktuk, and Hylaeus ellipticus, Evylaeus comagenensis, E. borealis, Sphecodes aff. pusillus, Anthidium tenulporae, Megachile centuncularis, M. f. frigida, and Anthophora b. bomboides from the northern limit of subarctic forest at Inuvik. All represent the northernmost records of the species. Some chorological and ecological notes are added to. ResumeOn menti… Show more

“…Both species are at the extreme northern edge of their range in Cape Breton. Lusioglossum comugenense occurs much farther north than the study locality: it has been recorded north of the Arctic Circle (Sakagami and Toda 1986), but its biology has hitherto not been studied. Cape Breton is fairly central in the latitudinal range of true Lusioglossum laevissimum, which also extends across North America to the Pacific coast (G. C. Eickwort, personal communication).…”

“…Monitoring range limits for selected species (see also Marker Species below) would therefore indicate the rapidity of change. For example, species of several distinctive groups, such as solitary bees (Sakagami and Toda, 1986) and psyllids (Hodkinson, 1978), currently drop out at or near the tree line and might be instructive indicators.…”
