“…Their results confirmed those of Benton et al (1962) that self-reports of 1eft handers were not predictive of manual proficiency. Whereas performance of self-c1assified right handers on manua1 tests corre1ated high1y with their verbal reports of hand preference, se1f-c1assified 1eft handers varied in both manua1 and speech 1atera1ity.…”

“…Benton, Meyers & Polder (1962) showed that self-reports on hand preference were significantly correlated with manual dexterity in righthanded, but not in left-handed individuals. Barnsley & Rabinovitch (1970) further pointed out that the full range of skills involved in hand performance should be taken into account.…”

“…Early studies by Benton [3] revealed that while 60% of righthanders with left hemisphere lesions presented with language impairments, only 32% of left-handers did. Hecaen and Sauget [32] report that though left-handers with left hemisphere lesions typically experience similar production difficulties as do right-handers, they are less likely to present with comprehension deficits.…”

“…The problems involved in the measurement of handedness have been comprehensively discussed (Benton, Meyers and Polder, 1962), but the relationship between hand preference (determined by self-report and response to questionnaire) and manual dexterity (measured by motor tasks) is far from clear (compare Satz, Achenbach and Fennell, 1967;Annett, 1970 a;Provins and Cunliffe, 1972). All our observations are concerned with reported preference and not measured performance; and for the reasons which Oldfield (1971) has enumerated we chose the questionnaire method of assessing hand preference for the Otmoor sample.…”
