Some biophysical properties of castor oil esterified with some acid anhydrides

Abstract: A series of castor oil adducts were synthesized by esterification of castor oil with acid anhydrides: phthalic, maleic and succinic anhydrides. The chemical structure of castor oil and the prepared adducts were characterized by means of IR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The number-average and weight-average molecular weights were measured by gel permeation chromatography. The electrical properties were studied through the permittivity, dielectric loss and conductivity measurements, which are considered to be in the… Show more

“…The 1 H-NMR signals have been attributed according to the literature. 23,24 In the CO spectrum the signals from 0.78-1.70 ppm are specic to -CH 3 and -CH 2 protons from a, b and f positions. The methine proton connected to the hydroxyl group from c position has a signal located between 3.4-3.8 ppm.…”

“…These differences in the discharge characteristics might be due to the electrical conductivity 22 . This notion is supported by the fact described below that there is a marked difference in physical and chemical characteristics between UPW or castor oil, which has a low conductivity 23 , 24 , and PBS with a high conductivity. Moreover, the changes in electrical conductivity of UPW by generation of chemical species induced a slight difference in the discharge characteristics between UPW and castor oil.…”

“…Polymers have been used since the 19th century in paint manufacture and other applications, but during the last decade, investigation into vegetable oil-based polymers [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] has been directed towards other purposes. Since the onset of the petroleum shortage, the preparation of polymers from renewable sources has become indispensible.…”
