Some characteristics of the distribution of heavy metals in urban topsoil of Xuzhou, China

Abstract: An assessment is presented of distribution characteristics of heavy metals in the urban topsoil from the city of Xuzhou. The concentrations of Ag, Al, As, Au, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Hg, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Pd, Pt, Sb, Sc, Se, Sn, V and Zn have been determined from 21 soil samples. Examination of lognormal distribution plots indicates that the diagrams of Al, Be, Fe, Ga, Li, and V are almost linear suggesting that these metals are almost unaffected by anthropogenic activities while the plots for As… Show more

“…Moreover, their morphological and chemical characteristics resemble those of copper-and ironrich airborne particulates of vehicular origin reported in earlier publications (Varrica et al 2003;Yue et al 2006;Pratt and Lottermoser 2007;Wang and Qin 2007).…”

“…Wang and Qin [32,33] reported Zn ranges 53-380 渭g/g dw in urban topsoil of Xuzhou (China) while Yap and Pang [7] reported the Zn ranges as 88.7-484 渭g/g dw in river drainage surface sediments collected from the north western aquatic area of Peninsular Malaysia. Yap et al [34,35] reported the Zn ranges as 50-336 渭g/g dw and 330-484 渭g/g dw for intertidal and drainages in Selangor, respectively.…”

“…Similar results were earlier found by other workers (Imperato et al 2003;Jain et al 2007;Turki 2007, Mahanta andBhattacharyya 2011;Huang et al 2013) and the same is attributed to the more pronounced tendency of Cu to form complexes with organic compounds. It is also likely that the stability of organo-Cu complex influenced the affinity of Cu towards humic organic matter (Wang and Qin 2007 et al 2004). Zuo et al 2012) found Cu-organic fraction to be 17.61% in road sediments.…”
