Some Coating Properties of Black Alder Wood as a Function of Varnish Type and Application Method

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the adhesion strength and glossiness of black alder wood (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn. L.) coated with water-borne and UV varnishes by two application systems. Prior to coating, the samples were prepared by sanding with four combinations of grit size sandpapers, 180 being the final grit. The surface quality of the specimens was measured with a white light profilometer. Any increase in grit size gradually reduced surface roughness, which further influenced the overall coat… Show more

“…It is a well-known fact that coating performance namely adhesion is depended on hygroscopic characteristic of wood composite panels. Therefore, coating type plays an important role on coating performance such as good bonding, coating hardness, abrasion resistance, UV resistance and film thickness (Salca et al 2016Sogutlu et al 2016, Nejad and Cooper 2011, Darmawan et al 2018, Erdinler et al 2019. Coating applications of varnishes, stain and painting are the most popular method in order to enhance the stability and appearance of the wood and wood based materials.…”

“…Surface quality of MDF depends on various machining processes such as sanding, drilling, and computer numerical control (CNC) machining conditions. Surface quality of MDF with different coating types are important for furniture quality (Ahola 1995, de Moura and Hernandez 2006, Salca et al 2016, Ramananantoandro et al 2017, Erdinler et al 2019. These applications may cause decreased surface coating performance, prevent achievement of the desired surface performance values, and cause an increase in the production costs (Hernandez and Cool 2008, Acda et al 2012, Nejad et al 2012, Dilik et al 2015, Gurleyen et al 2017.…”

“…Type of coating and the quality of surface are the most significant factors affecting the overall quality of a product (Ahola 1991, de Moura and Hernandez 2006, Ramananantoandro et al 2018, Salca et al 2017. Coating type is important mainly on bonding, UV resistance, layer hardness, abrasion resistance and layer thickness (Salca et al 2016, Nejad and Cooper 2011, Darmawan et al 2018, Sogutlu et al 2016. The most popular method for improving the stability and appearance of wood-based materials is the coating applications.…”
