“…In vitro studies with clofibrate have shown an increase in TBG binding capacity for thyroxine. 8 This work was supported by McKerron and associates,!o who reported increased TBG binding capacity in 11 of 12 patients treated with clofibrate for one month. In contrast, no consistent effect on binding capacities of TBG or thyroxine-binding prealbumin (TBP A) was observed by Musa, Ogilvie and Dowling.…”

“…These changes are identical with those observed when thyroxine alone is administered. Studies by Harrison & Harden (1966) in hypercholesterolaemic patients with severe myxoedema showed that the serum cholesterol was unaffected by clofibrate until a small supplement of thyroxine is added. The hypolipidaemic effect of thyroxine treatment is significantly enhanced by the simultaneous administration of clofibrate.…”

“…This latter enzyme is specifically increased by thyroxine administration (12). Furthermore the hypolipidemic effect of clofibrate is reduced or abolished in thyroidectomized animals (13), and the thyroxine binding capacity of thyroxine binding globulin is increased by clofibrate administration in man (14,15). Although these metabolic alterations have been clearly demonstrated, they are not correlated with lowering of serum trigiyceride levels, and no changes in serum free thyroxine levels have been noted (15).…”
