Some Experimental Investigations on Gas Turbine Cooling Performed with Infrared Thermography at Federico II

Abstract: This paper reviews some experimental measurements of convective heat transfer coefficient distributions which are connected with the cooling of gas turbines, performed by the authors’ research group at the University of Naples Federico II with infrared thermography. Measurements concern impinging jets, cooling of rotating disks, and gas turbine blades, which are either stationary or rotating. The heated thin foil sensor, associated with the detection of surface temperature by means of infrared thermography, is… Show more

“…In recent years, non-contact temperature measurement technologies such as infrared radiation temperature measurement, crystal temperature measurement and laser temperature measurement have made amazing progress, especially the method of using infrared technology to measure the temperature of objects has been widely used [6][7][8]. Astarita et al [9] described in detail the measurement method of convective heat transfer coefficient related to complex fluid in fixed and rotating parts of gas turbine, and used cationic thin foil sensor to measure surface temperature by infrared method. Shin et al [10] accurately detected the infrared temperature of two typical low and high emissivity surfaces in a high temperature wind tunnel by taking the gas turbine background radiation and the target's spectral emittance into proper consideration.…”

“…Literature Review projects. Commonly-seen applications include non-destructive testing [9], laser welding [10], bio-information collection and analysis in physiology [11][12][13], sport science [14,15], medication [16][17][18][19], ecology [20,21], geomorphic changes monitoring in geology [22], heat transfer analysis [23,24], thermal analysis of semiconductor lasers [25], etc. This method utilizes the fact that the energy radiated from a surface is dependent on its temperature.…”
