Some Factors Affecting the Breakdown Strength of Solid Dielectrics: A Short Review

Abstract: This paper refers to some factors affecting the breakdown strength of solid insulating materials. Solid insulating materials play a most important role in the high voltage industry. Factors, such as area effect, crystallinity, impregnation with liquids, temperature, the role of interfaces and mechanical stressing, are investigated and commented upon.

“…The existence of space charges and partial discharges inside the dielectrics plays a dominant role in the deterioration of their insulating capability. In [31][32][33], their contribution was analyzed, showing that these phenomena are present continuously in the HV industry and the related apparatus and the efforts to control and to study them may improve the HV apparatus reliability and insulation life time function. Charge packets propagation, space charges, partial discharges, electrical trees emanation and propagation, and electrical dipole formation are phenomena strongly correlated to each other, defining thus and affecting the insulating capability of materials.…”

“…The reliability of coils is quite different depending on the type of coil, the field of use, the conditions of construction, and the manner of maintenance and operation, but, as a guide, for coils built in a single layer (which usually have low inductance), the failure rate can be considered λ = (0.01-0.017)%/10 3 h [46,47]. For coils made in several layers, the probability of failure increases considerably (3-4 times) because it is possible to have short circuits between turns, but especially between layers.…”
