Working Paper SMART -LERECO N°13.04 Les Working Papers SMART-LERECO ont pour vocation de diffuser les recherches conduites au sein des unités SMART et LERECO dans une forme préliminaire permettant la discussion et avant publication définitive. The views expressed in the SMART-LERECO Working Papers are solely those of their authors 1 Working Paper SMART -LERECO N°13-04 AbstractAgricultural land fragmentation is widespread around the world and may affect farmers' decisions and therefore have an impact on the performance of farms, in either a negative or a positive way. We investigated this impact for the western region of Brittany, France, in 2007. To do so, we regressed a set of performance indicators on a set of fragmentation descriptors. The performance indicators (production costs, yields, revenue, profitability, technical and scale efficiency) were calculated at the farm level using Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data, while the fragmentation descriptors were calculated at the municipality level using data from the cartographic field pattern registry (RPG). The various fragmentation descriptors enabled not only the traditional number and average size of plots, but also their scattering in the geographical space, to be taken into account. Our analysis highlights the fact that the measures of land fragmentation usually used in the literature do not reveal the whole set of significant relationships with farm performance and that, in particular, measures accounting for distance should be taken into consideration more systematically.Keywords: agricultural land fragmentation, farm performance, cartographic field pattern registry, France JEL classifications: Q12, Q15, D24 Le morcellement parc...

Generally, land fragmentation is a universal trait of all agricultural systems which affects farmland productivity and no one had documented a rural society where there was no land fragmentation. Hence, this study sought to ascertain the effects of land fragmentation on farmland productivity in the highland districts of Northwestern Ethiopia by using cross-sectional data collected from 240 respondents during 2015/16 production seasons and analyzed by using linear and Cobb-Douglass production functions. In land productivity model, 38% of variations in farmland productivity are explained by variations in independent variables including land fragmentation parameters. Average farmland size of 1.25 ha was obtained as minimum size that can generate minimum food and cash requirement of an average family of five adult equivalents. Hence, the government should come up with land use policy and population growth controlling program, which enables determining minimum economic farmland size, improving land productivity, and finding ways to strengthen off-farm activities and livestock sector to absorb more labor and enhance means of generating more income so as to decrease minimum farmland size required.

Assessment of land fragmentation of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine

Introduction. Agriculture is one of the leading sectors of the Ukrainian economy, however it still remains underdeveloped. The latest analysis shows an increasing number of farms with agricultural land over 10,000 ha. Nevertheless, family farms with an average size of 0.9 ha comprise 44.7% in the structure of gross agricultural production in Ukraine. Despite this fact, they occupy twice as less of arable land than agricultural enterprises and farms. Ukrainian scientists believe that the main reason why such a situation is observed is the fragmentation of agricultural land. The purpose of this paper is to identify some metric indicators for the assessment of land fragmentation of agricultural enterprises and analyse how land fragmentation prevents agricultural enterprises from using agricultural land. Results. Conducted analysis has shown that the dispersion, the edge density, the number of land owners and land parcels, the small size and the shape of land parcels are not associated with the problem related to land fragmentation. It has been found out that the fragmentation of land ownership and the fragmentation of land use exists only in theory and in legal documents. Moreover, the internal agricultural land fragmentation does not represent a major problem for agricultural enterprises. Conclusions. Land fragmentation is not a major problem for agricultural enterprises due to the excessive lease of agricultural land and virtual boundaries of land parcels (land ownership), projected field roads and projected shelterbelts. Nowadays, the main problem related to the use of agricultural land is the discrepancy between land ownership and land use.
