Some Middle Silurian Reefs of Gotland

Abstract: Summary A number of illustrations are presented, which show some characteristics of the reefs occurring in the Upper Visby and Hogklint Beds of Gotland. These series should probably be correlated with the uppermost Llandoverian and Lower Wenlockian. Reef growth took place as the water became progressively shallower. There are no reefs in the lower part of the Upper Visby Beds, which consist of marl with limestone Ienses, and was formed in relatively deep water. No reefs occur in the uppermost Hogklint, which c… Show more

“…Thus the sea-level drop that promoted deposition of the shoaling upward Gannarve Mb, c. 30 km towards the SW, was at least as large as the erosional relief on eastern Gotland, i.e. 16 m. The Bara Mb coarsens upward, comprising thinand crossbedded, pure oolite grainstones and oolitic skeletal/peloidal grainstones, reaching a maximum preserved thickness of 5 m (at Bara 1; Manten, 1971). Three different oolite micro-facies were interpreted as representing both mobile bar and mixed bar/lagoonal deposits (Calner & Säll, 1999).…”

“…According to Manten (1971), Gotland was located not far from the northwestern border of the Silurian sea, which covered parts of the present Baltic area. The course of the ancient shore line is assumed to have been parallel to the present-day southwest-northeast strike of the strata.…”

“…The localities on Gotland yield numerous sedimentological data that allow tracing the evolution of the succession through time (Manten 1971;Laufeld and Bassett 1981;Cherns 1983;Samtleben et al 2000;Baarli et al 2003). However, in spite of good exposures, the Gotland sections do not enable study of the anatomy of a carbonate platform in detail and for a selected time horizon, and particularly give no opportunity to reconstruct lateral facies changes.…”
