Twenty-four pregnant Scottish Blackface ewes were divided into three temperature-treatment groups 14 days before expected lambing: closely shorn and kept at 6°C (cold treatment, CD); in full fleece at 26°C (warm treatment, WM); and in full fleece at 6°C (controls, CL). Food allocation and intakes were similar for each group. Their lambs were tested for cold-induced summit metabolic rate capability (SMR) on the day of birth at a mean age of 12 h using water immersion to provide cooling. On the following day, the calorigenic response to subcutaneous injections of noradrenaline (NA) was measured to assess non-shivering thermogenesis capability. The ewes were blood-sampled during pregnancy and the lambs before and after the SMR test.In the ewes, .blood glucose and free fatty acid levels were higher during cold treatment, but not significantly so. Blood glucose was lower in lambs from CD ewes (CD lambs) before SMR tests; other differences were not significant.During the cold test, SMR was highest in CD lambs, but not significantly so. Rectal temperature declined least during test in the CD lambs (P < 0-05).The peak metabolic response (PMR) following NA injection was about 1-5 times greater in CD lambs than in the CL and WM lambs (P < 0-05). The mean elevation of PMR over thermoneutral metabolic rate was respectively: 2-8, 1-8 and 1-7 times in the CD, CL and WM lambs (P < 0-05), and this elevation was sustained for longer in the CD lambs (P < 0-01). Thus, the total metabolic response to NA was markedly greater in CD lambs.It was concluded that cold exposure during late pregnancy favoured the deposition of (or checked the normal decline in) foetal brown adipose tissue, so raising the neonatal capacity for non-shivering thermogenesis.

The objective of the studies reported was to examine the potential usefulness of measurements of concentrations of plasma glucose, 3-hydroxybutyrate and non-esterified fatty acids as means of assessing in quantitative terms the adequacy of energy intake of beef cattle.Relationships between the concentrations of these metabolites and of either energy intake or energy status were examined in three experiments conducted respectively on 56 housed, mature, non-pregnant, non-lactating cows, on 115 housed, mature, pregnant cows, and on groups of 10 to 12 mature, nonpregnant, non-lactating cows grazing five plant communities.The results indicated that under the conditions pertaining in these studies plasma glucose concentration was not likely to constitute a useful index of energy status in housed or grazing animals.Plasma 3-hydroxybutyrate concentration was closely related to estimates of energy status in the pregnant cows and was considered to be potentially valuable as an index of energy status in animals in which there is a relatively high glucose demand.Plasma non-esterified fatty acids concentration was closely related to and a potentially useful index of either energy intake or energy status in all cases, but postulated effects of diurnal variations in circulating concentrations make it imperative that relationships used for predictive purposes are derived under the conditions in which they are to be applied.

Progesterone and LH concentrations were measured in the plasma of blood samples taken from forty-eight pregnant ewes on Days 100, 120 and 134 of gestation. The ewes, in two groups of twenty-four were maintained from Day 100 until parturition on two planes of nutrition which supplied daily energy and protein intakes of about 4-1 or 2-3 Mcal metabolizable energy and either 192 or 111 g digestible crude protein per ewe. Within the groups, the ewes carried one, two or three fetuses and the feed intake was adjusted according to litter size to produce a uniform nutritional state within the group. On Day 100, litter size affected the concentration of plasma progesterone (P less than 0-001), but had no effect on Days 120 or 134 when the ewes were fed according to litter size. The low feed intake however caused a significant increase in plasma progesterone concentrations. The LH concentrations showed no major changes during late pregnancy and no effect of nutrition or little size on the plasma hormone concentration was observed. It was concluded that the effect of litter size on plasma progesterone concentration recorded on Day 100 or gestation was partly mediated by level of nutrition.
