Some Thermodynamic Properties of Polystyrene Solutions.

Abstract: This paper presents some further work on a thermodynamic investigation of polymer solutions which may be considered to have begun with studies on a typical polar polymer, polyvinyl chloride (4, 5); the present work is based on polystyrene as a representative of the class of non-polar polymers. Here we deal chiefly with the effect of structural features and temperature on the osmotic pressure of dilute polystyrene solutions. A more comprehensive investigation, including a study of concentrated solutions, has be… Show more

“…Actually, it probably would be easier to perform a series of osmotic pressure determinations for the evaluation of M", and then to fit the four moments to the proposed curve. “…There can be found in the literature direct experimental evidence that, for soluble branched polystyrene, the interaction parameter is deÐnitely higher compared with its linear counterpart. 45 The osmotic pressure measurements carried out on polystyrene solutions made possible the determination of with an accuracy of ^0.005. This tendency s 12 was observed for other systems46 and agreed quite well with the theoretical analysis by Tompa.…”

“…This method for obtaining knowm amounts of cross linking has been reported by several investigators of this subject (3,8,16). A basic value for the molecular weight exponent of a relatively noncross-linked polymer was obtained by evaluation of fractions of a polystyrene polymerized in the GR-S system at 50°C.…”
