“…Many of the visual and action methods used in family therapy, such as enactments (Minuchin, 1975), semantic polarities, and positioning (Campbell & Groenbaek, 2006), rely on spatial metaphors. Sculpting is another method that has a rich tradition in Systemic psychotherapy (Cade, 1982;Papp, 1982;Satir, 1972). More recently the technique has been extended by Papp, Scheinkman, and Malpas (2013) to help couples overcome impasses in their relationship.…”

“…The story becomes a 'metaphor' when it is presented with the intention of instructing or advising the listener (Gordon, 1978). In recent years the use of metaphor in therapy has been discussed and accounts of its effectiveness in producing behavioural change have been outlined in the form of case illustrations (e.g., Cade, 1982;Martin, 1984). On the basis of his clinical experience Martin (1984) suggested that using metaphorical ideas, language and action can become deeply meaningful to clients, often bypassing resistance and the defensive organisation described by psychoanalytic literature, and/or the 'censor' described by Koestler (1975).…”
