“…Similarly, a trial conducted in Portugal confirmed that the application of boron during the growing season positively influenced the hazelnut filling in the cultivar ‘Butler’ 72 . Other trials recently carried out have released some optimized foliar nutrition protocols tested in Italy on cultivar ‘Tonda Gentile’ 73 and on cultivars ‘Tonda Romana’ and ‘Nocchione’, 74 in Oregon on different cultivars 75 and in Chile on the ‘Barcelona’ cultivar 76 . As a result of this evidence from the literature, accompanied by newly available cultivar‐specific foliar diagnostics (Table 3), foliar applications of macro and micronutrients are becoming routine in commercial orchards, and two–three administrations during the growing season are recommended, often combined with other compatible agrochemicals for pest and disease treatment.…”

“…In several areas where intensive cultivation of hazelnut is spreading, the use of foliar fertilizers recently attracted increased interest in the context of more sustainable orchard management practices [27,28]. Furthermore, the application of foliar sprays to integrate micronutrients such as boron became a common nutritional strategy in non-deficient hazelnut orchards according to the results of studies conducted in many areas of cultivation.…”

“…The growing interest in foliar nutrition applied to hazelnut orchards revived some experimental activities to optimize intervention protocols, while also taking into account the varietal characteristics of the plants, as shown by recent acquisitions in "Tonda Gentile" [27], "Tonda Romana" and "Nocchione" [28], "Barcelona" [29], and various cultivars of American origin [21]. This intervention strategy, which is also being tested for applications of TFN (total foliar nutrition) to hazelnut orchards [28], is supported by scientific evidence that certifies how the leaves can rapidly absorb nutrients, contributing to a significant attenuation of the drifts' phenomena and environmental pollution.…”

“…The foliar application of calcium also plays an important role during the kernel filling stage (Cakca and Sanguankeo, 2014). Recently, trials were conducted to develop optimized protocols for hazelnut nutrition, including foliar applications, in Italy on the cultivar 'Tonda Gentile delle Langhe' (Roversi, 2011;Pansecchi et al, 2014), in Oregon on different cultivars (Olsen and Cakca, 2009), and in Chile on the cultivar 'Barcelona' (Ellena et al, 2014).…”
