Sonoanatomic Variation of Pes Anserine Bursa

Abstract: BackgroundThe pes anserine bursa lies beneath the pes anserine tendon, which is the insertional tendon of the sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus muscles on the medial side of the tibia, but it can lie in different sites in the medial knee. Accurate diagnosis of the position of the bursa is critical for diagnostic and therapeutic goals. The aim of this study was to evaluate sonoanatomic variations of the pes anserine bursa in the medial knee.MethodsOne hundred seventy asymptomatic volunteers were enrolled … Show more

“…The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score was used to evaluate the patients' pain during the knee rehabilitation program every two days in POD 5,7,9,15,17,19,21,23,25,27,and 29. We also evaluated the dose of analgesic (etoricoxib) consumption.…”

“…With ultrasound, the pes anserinus bursa can be identified in its usual position (i.e., between the pes tendons and the tibia) in approximately 67% of volunteers without symptoms, between the pes tendons and MCL in 21%, and between the constituents of the pes anserinus in 8% [20]. At MRI, fluid is seen within the bursa deep to the pes anserinus tendons and superficial to the superficial MCL [21].…”

“…Ultrasound can demonstrate a distended bursa and guide targeted therapeutic corticosteroid injections. 10,90,91 MRI findings of pes anserine bursitis are fluid and inflammation interposed Long axis ultrasound image of the iliotibial band in a 33-year-old asymptomatic man demonstrates the linear hyperechoic appearance of the iliotibial band, which is intact at its distal attachment upon Gerdy's tubercle ( Ã ). There is no underlying fluid, focal thickening, or surrounding inflammation.…”
