Sonographic Evaluation of Bladder Volume in Diabetic Children and Adolescents Compared With Nondiabetic Subjects

Abstract: Objectives. An increase in volume and evidence of postvoiding residuals are both encountered in the bladder of diabetic patients and can lead to urinary tract infections and impair renal function. Our objective was to compare the bladder volume of diabetic children and adolescents with that of nondiabetic subjects. Methods. We investigated 247 diabetic patients and 228 control subjects between the ages 3 and 21 years. The sonographic examination was performed with a full bladder, after spontaneous voiding, and… Show more

“…Another interesting but confusing finding was that Col1a1-Gsk3b KO mice die prematurely, which is reminiscent of LBW-induced male-specific diabetes and premature death in mice (50,51,61,62). Indeed, our male mice show signs of type 2 diabetes, including increasing blood glucose as they age, urinary glucose, large bladder, and hydronephrosis (63,64). Only mutant mice near death had large bladders, whereas kidney and urogenital damage were present in male KO mice humanely destroyed prior to signs of illness.…”

“…This supports the hypothesis that LUTS occurs early in DM disease progression. Castro et al examined bladder capacity and post void residuals in adolescent patients with and without DM and found increased bladder capacities and post void residuals in patients who had DM for as few as 5 years 30 . These bladder characteristics are accepted to be early signs of DBD.…”

“…3 Furthermore, evidence of post-voiding residuals is encountered in the bladder of diabetic patients which may lead to urinary tract infection. 4 The common bladder dysfunction is usually due to hyporeflexia of detrusor muscle. However, some patients may have detrusor overactivity without evidence of hyporeflexia.…”
