Sonographic evaluation of the portal vein diameter in patients with chronic liver disease in northeastern Nigeria

Abstract: Introduction Chronic liver disease is a public health burden worldwide. Portal hypertension is a major portosystemic abnormality in chronic liver disease. This study aimed to determine the main, right, and the left portal vein diameter in patients with chronic liver disease. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was carried out at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, northeastern Nigeria from December 2018 to September 2019. Ethical clearance was obtained from the institutio… Show more

“…A research study conducted in northeastern Nigeria, included a total of 200 subjects comprising 100 with CLD and other 100 were included in matched control group, in which 106 (53%) males and 94(47%) females, aged between 18 and 73 years. according to this study, Portal vein diameter was more in males than in females 3 .…”

“…The normal diameter of the portal vein is about 7-15mm 2 . CLD is a continuous degradation of liver functions, Cirrhosis is the last stage of chronic liver disease 3 . In Liver cirrhosis normal liver functional cells replace by scar tissue , cirrhosis causes change in hepatic vascular pattern 4 , this change results in increased resistance to portal blood flow which in turn causes portal hypertension 5 .…”

“…These findings were similar to those reported by Chou (12) in Malaysia, Songmen (8) Harshita (16) in North India also reported similar findings of a portal vein diameter of Original research 9.17±2.33mm (males) and 8.95±1.9mm (females), respectively, with an average PSV value of 13-15cm/s and Gallix (17) reporting an average portal vein PI value of 0.48±0.31. The similarities in these results may not be unconnected to the employment of similar methods, techniques of measurements, instruments, and observer expertise since sonography is a highly operatordependent imaging modality (18).…”
