Sonographic Prediction of Pediatric Renal Scarring With Full Parameter Normalization

Abstract: Objectives To predict the chronic kidney disease (CKD) state for pediatric patients based on scaled renal cortical echogenicity. Methods Sonograms from a cohort of 26 patients, half of whom had stage 4 or 5 CKD, whereas the other half had normal renal function, were analyzed. For each patient image, a region of interest (ROI) was drawn around the renal cortex for comparison with an ROI drawn around the hepatic parenchyma. The latter ROI was shifted spatially to normalize the signal attenuations and time‐gain c… Show more

“…In this regard, RBUS is desirable to identify renal scar formation because there is no radiation exposure and it is a noninvasive procedure. However, there are some controversies regarding diagnostic accuracy (37)(38)(39), although recent advances in Doppler ultrasonography have improved its sensitivity (40). Patients who have no abnormal findings on RBUS, VCUG, and 99m Tc-DMSA renal scintigraphy in the acute phase should be noted because these patients may not undergo 99m Tc-DMSA renal scintigraphy at a later time to assess permanent renal scarring.…”

“…The approach used to generate the DAS is similar to that employed in prior work [39] to assess a point's distance from the nearest point on the ultrasound probe surface for the purpose of normalizing the time gain compensation. In that paper, our goal was to find the mimimum distance from the center of mass (COM) of our region-of-interest (ROI) to the nearest probe surface point; in this work we want ROI-COMborders-to-transducer nearest distances.…”
