Sorghum and Foxtail Millet—Promising Crops for the Changing Climate in Central Europe

Abstract: Climate change is connected to many undesirable aspects which may strongly affect agricultural production in the future, not only in the Czech Republic but also in other countries in Central Europe. The most serious risks with the main impacts on agricultural production are the frequency and intensity of occurrence of extreme events. Problems caused by drought and its impact on agricultural production are starting to be serious and urgent. One of the solutions is using the drought-tolerant/resistant species an… Show more

“…With the discovery of cytoplasmic male sterility in the 1950s, the commercial production of grain sorghum was completely replaced by hybrids [47]. At present, a significant proportion of grain, biomass, and forage production is based on hybrids in Germany [48]. To enhance the value of this crop for ethanol production, the same genetic mechanism can be utilized to improve the concentration of soluble sugars in grain sorghum varieties.…”

“…In general, it is called as "the camel of crops" because of its ability to grow in arid soils and withstand prolonged drought (Assefa et al 2010). The main use of sorghum worldwide primarily is food for human and secondarily feed for poultry and livestock (Hermuth et al 2016). More sorghum is used for biofuel and animal feed than for human consumption in the developed countries like United States, Mexico and Australia (Mundia et al 2019;Mathur et al 2017).…”

“…was het areaal van dit gewas groter dan dat van de nieuwe variëteiten van maïs (Hermuth et al, 2016). Op dit moment wordt het als voedergewas geteeld in Frankrijk (Hermuth et al, 2016;Emile et al, 2006), Italië (Tabacco et al, 2011;Cattani et al, 2017) en Hongarije (Kálmán et al, 2016;Kovács, 2014) …”
