Sweet, grain, and dual-purpose sorghums differ in a number of important traits, including biomass production, total solutes in the stem juice, and sugar accumulation across the stem. Ten dual-purpose hybrids, two sweet genotypes, and two grain landraces of sorghums were characterized under temperate environmental conditions to determine their potential for bioethanol production. Five sorghum hybrids (Ganymed, Hannibal, Tarzan, Merlin, and Zerberus) performed better with respect to cane yield, juice yield, potential sugar, and ethanol yields compared to sweet and grain genotypes. While the sweet genotype KIT1 produced the highest sugar concentration in the stem, the lowest concentration was produced by the grain landrace Razinieh. The study showed that plant height, leaf number, leaf weight, cane yield, and juice yield were positively correlated with the sugar yield in fresh stalk. Sugar accumulation was higher in the central internodes of all genotypes. Clustering analysis showed that sweet genotypes are located more closely to dual-purpose hybrids than grain landraces. We discuss the results with respect to the potential of dual-purpose sorghum hybrids for bio-economy in Germany.

Main conclusion Identification of molecular markers and characterization of nutrient transporters could help to improve the tolerance under abiotic and low nutrient stresses in sorghum ensuring higher yield to conserve food securityAbstract Sorghum is an important cereal crop delivering food and energy security in the semi-arid tropics of the world. Adverse climatic conditions induced by global warming and low input agriculture system in developing countries demand for the improvement of sorghum to tolerate various abiotic stresses. In this review, we discuss the application of marker-assisted breeding and nutrient transporter characterization studies targeted towards improving the tolerance of sorghum under drought, salinity, cold, low phosphate and nitrogen stresses. Family members of some nutrient transporters such as nitrate transporter (NRT), phosphate transporter (PHT) and sulphate transporter (SULTR) were identified and characterized for improving the low nutrient stress tolerance in sorghum. Several quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified for drought, salinity and cold stresses with an intention to enhance the tolerance of sorghum under these stresses. A very few QTL and nutrient transporters have been identified and validated under low nitrogen and phosphorus stresses compared to those under drought, salinity and cold stresses. Marker-assisted breeding and nutrient transporter characterization have not yet been attempted in sorghum under other macro-and micro-nutrient stresses. We hope this review will raise awareness among plant breeders, scientists and biotechnologists about the importance of sorghum and need to conduct the studies on marker-assisted breeding and nutrient transporter under low nutrient stresses to improve the sorghum production.

Rapport 1064Kasper, G.J., Teelt van sorghum als voedergewas lijkt perspectiefvol in Nederland.Wageningen Livestock Research, Rapport 1064.Samenvatting NL Sorghum kan in korte tijd veel voedingsstoffen opnemen, ook op armere en droge gronden, en gaat efficiënt om met voedingsstoffen, vooral stikstof en water. Het gewas groeit goed op gronden waar ook snijmaïs het goed doet. Recente proefveldonderzoeken in Nederland tonen ten opzichte van maïs gelijke tot 25% hogere opbrengsten (ds/ha/jaar), hogere gehalten aan ruw-eiwit (tot 69%) en zetmeel (-10 tot +24%). Kennishiaten zijn: 1) kennis over de voederwaarde, 2) gebrek aan praktische kengetallen over teelt, fermentatie en dierprestaties, 3) combiteelt winterrogge-sorghum in het groeiseizoen en 4) tussenteelt van sorghum bij continuteelt van snijmaïs. Summary UKSorghum absorbs a lot of nutrients in a short period of time, even on rather poor and dry soils. The crop has a favourable nitrogen and water use efficiency. The crop grows well on soils where maize grows well too. Recent field trial studies in the Netherlands show equal or higher than 25% yields (dry matter/ha/year), higher levels of crude protein (up to 69%) and starch (-10% to +24%) than maize.Knowledge gaps are: 1) feed evaluation characteristics, 2) practical data on cultivation, fermentation and animal performance, 3) combi-cultivation winter rye and sorghum per growing season, and 4) intercropping of sorghum in continuous maize cropping.
