Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a recalcitrant group of chemicals and can be found throughout the environment. They often collect in wastewater systems with virtually no degradation prior to environmental discharge. Some PFAS partitions to solids captured in wastewater treatment which require further processing. Of all the commonly applied solids treatment technologies, incineration offers the only possibility to completely destroy PFAS. Little is known about the fate of PFAS through incineration, in particular, for the systems employed in water resource recovery facilities (WRRF). This review covers available research on the fate of PFAS through incineration systems with a focus on sewage sludge incinerators. This research indicates that at least some PFAS destruction will occur with incineration approaches used at WRRFs. Furthermore, PFAS in flue gas, ash, or water streams used for incinerator pollution control may be undetectable. Future research involving full‐scale fate studies will provide insight on the efficacy of PFAS destruction through incineration and whether other compounds of concern are generated. Practitioner points Thermal processing is the only commercial approach available to destroy PFAS. Thermal degradation conditions required for destruction of PFAS during incineration processes are discussed. Fate of PFAS through water resource recovery facility incineration technologies remains unclear. Other thermal technologies such as smoldering combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, and hydrothermal liquefaction provide promise but are in developmental phases.

Comprehensive multiphase NMR is a novel NMR technique that permits all components (solutions, gels, and solids) to be studied in unaltered natural samples. In this study a wide range of CMP-NMR interaction and editing-based experiments are combined to follow contaminants (pentafluorophenol (PFP) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)) from the solution state (after a spill) through the gel-state and finally into the true solid-state (sequestered) in an intact water-swollen soil. Kinetics experiments monitoring each phase illustrate PFOA rapidly transfers from solution to the solid phase while for PFP the process is slower with longer residence times in the solution and gel phase. Interaction-based experiments reveal that PFOA enters the soil via its hydrophobic tails and selectively binds to soil microbial protein. PFP sorption shows less specificity exhibiting interactions with a range of gel and solid soil components with a preference toward aromatics (mainly lignin). The results indicate that in addition to more traditional measurements such as Koc, other factors including the influence of the contaminant on the soil-water interface, specific biological interactions, soil composition (content of lignin, protein, etc.) and physical accessibility/swellability of soil organic components will likely be central to better explaining and predicting the true behavior of contaminants in soil.

The need to understand the effects of wildfire and post-fire contamination of soil and groundwater has grown as a result of the expansion of the extent and severity of wildfires around the world. In addition to their direct hazards, wildfires can also contribute to human and environmental health concerns due to secondary contamination, e.g., wildfire suppression such as aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) can release per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into the soil, which are very mobile, toxic, and persistent. Both direct seepage through the topsoil and biotransformation of fluorotelomers (FTs) determine the fate of PFAS in soils and aquifers. Research has indicated that phase partitioning behavior, such as sorption to soils and sediments, controls the fate and transport of chemicals in the environment According to various studies, the main soil or sediment characteristics that control PFAS' sorption behavior include organic carbon (OC), pH, index cations, and ionic strength. However, neither OC, pH, nor claycontent alone could explain the sorption behavior of PFAS. More research is needed to help to understand the role of co-contaminants on the sorption behavior of PFAS, the role of surface charge on the sorption of PFAS, and on a wider range of PFAS chain compounds in the future. This paper aims to review the fate and transport of PFAS and identify the areas of research need.
