Sorption of volatile C1 to C6 alkanols in plant cuticles

Abstract: The partitioning of a set of 14 primary, secondary and tertiary alkanols with chain-lengths ranging from C1 to C6 in the three-phase system plant cuticle, water and atmosphere was investigated. A static headspace gas chromatographic method was devised for measuring the distribution of the volatile alkanols between the gas, cuticle and aqueous phases, respectively. Measurements were performed in the temperature range from 5-40 °C. The isotherms for the sorption of alkanols in the cuticular polymer matrix (MX) o… Show more

“…Partition Experiments. Partitioning of VOCs between the gas and the cuticular material or the aqueous phase was measured by a static headspace gas chromatographic method described in detail elsewhere (35). In short, experimental procedures were as follows: exactly determined amounts of MX (4-400 mg) were added to 20 mL glass vials (Macherey-Nagel, Du ¨ren, Germany) sealed with PTFE-lined septum caps.…”

“…The K ww for pyridate is more than 4 orders of magnitude higher than the K ww for CL9673 ( Figure and Table ). It was shown previously that the logarithms of partition coefficients in the cutin polymer ( , ) and in reconstituted cuticular wax () increased by a value of 0.5 with each additional methylene group added to the molecule.…”

“…These values were converted into waterplant cuticle partition coefficients (log KMX w ) through use of the gas-water partition (log Kaw) [denoted as log L W , previously (16)]. For log Kaw, we used our own compilation (16,20) together with a few values reported by Riederer et al (4,9). The latter workers were able to calculate only 40 log KMX w values, but we have data on all 50 possible values.…”

“…Air-MX partition coefficients, denoted as KMX a , were determined for 50 solutes through the technique of headspace analysis. These partition coefficients are actually the same as Ostwald solubility coefficients, L. For 40 of the solutes, gas-water partition coefficients (Kaw) were either determined (9) or were available (4) and were used to calculate water-MX partition coefficients (KMX w ) through KMX w ) KMX a -Kaw. Values of KMX w are important because they model the process of partition between wet deposition and the cuticle, whereas KMX a models partition between dry deposition and the cuticle.…”
