a b s t r a c tIn this study, the sorption behavior of two important fission product radionuclides ( 137 Cs and 140 Ba) onto sodium form of insolubilized humic acid (INaA) were investigated as a function of time, cation concentration and temperature, utilizing the radiotracer method. The sorption processes are well described by both Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich type isotherms. Thermodynamic constants such as; free energy ( G ads ), enthalpy ( H ads ), entropy ( S ads ) of adsorption were determined. It was found that Ba 2+ was adsorbed five times more than Cs + onto structurally modified humic acid and kinetic studies indicated that adsorption behavior of both ions obey the pseudo second order rate law. The effect of pH change on sorption was also examined. FTIR and solid-state carbon NMR ( 13 CNMR) spectroscopic techniques were used to understand the structural changes during insolubilization process. Quantitative determination of adsorption sites was carried out using potantiometric titration.

Sr2+ / Kaolinite / Magnesite Summary. The sorption behavior of Sr 2+ ions on natural minerals rich in kaolinite and magnesite was studied using SEM/EDS, XPS, XRPD, AAS/AES and DRIFT techniques. Quantitative analysis of the XPS data shows that magnesite is more effective in Sr 2+ uptake than kaolinite. DRIFT spectra and XRPD patterns indicate that the structures of both minerals were not affected upon Sr 2+ sorption. Intercalation of DMSO in kaolinite lamellae aiming at increasing the interlayer space did not significantly enhance the sorption capacity of the clay towards Sr 2+ probably due to the lack of a negative charge on the accessible sites. EDS mapping indicated that while the sorbed Sr is equally distributed on surface of natural kaolinite, it was associated -to a larger extent -with the regions richer in Mg in the case of natural magnesite. Comparing the uptake mechanisms of natural magnesite with that of pure MgCO 3 , it was seen that while natural magnesite sorbed Sr 2+ mainly through an ion exchange type mechanism, the formation of SrCO 3 coprecipitate was detected on the surface of the MgCO 3 at higher loadings.

The sorption of Cs q on natural kaolinite has been studied using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometrẙ q Ž . TOF-SIMS . Depth profiling up to 70 A was performed to study the change in the amount of sorbed Cs as a function of depth in the kaolinite matrix. Quantitative determination of the amounts of primary cations in the kaolinite structure before and after sorption of Cs q ions was carried out to identify which cations are possibly taking part in the sorption process. The experimental results showed that large amounts of Cs q are sorbed onto the surface of kaolinite and that sorption decreases sharply over the first 10-A depth. The fact that kaolinite surface was negatively charged under the operating pH indicates that physisorption has an important contribution to the sorption process. The results also showed that Na, Mg 2q and Fe 3q were involved in the sorption process with Cs q and that the total decrease in the amounts of these cations is close to the amount of sorbed Cs q , suggesting that ion exchange is the dominant sorption mechanism. ᮊ
