Metaphorical Perceptions of Preservice Social Studies Teachers About the Communication Skills

The study aimed to determine the perceptions of preservice social studies teachers about communication; metaphors were employed to determine communication skill perceptions. In the study, a qualitative research method known as phenomenology design was employed. The study group included 127 preservice social studies teachers in various classes. In the study, metaphoric perceptions form was used to collect the data. The collected data were analysed with content analysis. The study findings demonstrated that preservice social studies teachers produced 36 valid metaphors in 7 different conceptual categories (a requirement, a nonverbal code system, a mutual process, a positive connotation, a unifying element, a dynamic phenomenon, communication as a method to reflect ideas). The total metaphor count and metaphor frequencies revealed that the highest number of metaphors was produced in the communications as a requirement category. The most repeated metaphor in this category was the requirement of water to sustain life. In this category, concepts such as blood, breathing, and oxygen, which are important for human life, were expressed as metaphors that represented communication skills.

Bu araştırmanın amacı, sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adaylarının tablo, grafik ve diyagram çizme ve yorumlama becerisine ilişkin görüşlerini belirlemektir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma türlerinden olan durum çalışması deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırma, 2019-2020 eğitim-öğretim yılında 36 kadın, 14 erkek olmak üzere toplam 50 öğretmen adayı ile birlikte; Fırat Üniversitesi, İnönü Üniversitesi, Kilis 7 Aralık Üniversitesi, Muş Alparslan Üniversitesi ve Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültelerinde öğrenim gören 4. Sınıf sosyal bilgiler öğretmen adayları ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada verilere yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu ile ulaşılmış ve verilerin analizinde içerik analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. Veriler, NVİVO 11 nitel veri analiz programı ile çözümlenmiştir. Öğretmen adaylarının söz konusu beceri için genellikle sayısal verilerin görsellerle ifade edilmesi şeklinde tanımlamalar yaptıkları tespit edilmiş ve bu becerinin kazandırılması konusunda sosyal bilgiler dersini yeterli gördükleri sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre, beceri eğitimi verilirken yöntem ve teknikler üzerinde daha fazla durulması önerilebilir.

The Relationship Between Primary School Students’ Social Skills and Attitudes towards Social Studies Course and Their Academic Achievement

In the current study, it was aimed to examine the relationship between fourth grade students’ social skills, their attitudes towards Social Studies course and their academic achievement. In line with the purpose, the present research adopted a convergent parallel design, one of the mixed type research methods. Quantitative data were collected from 172 fourth grade students who were enrolled in state school in İstanbul. The quantitative phase of the study conducted using ‘Social Skills Evaluation Scale’ and ‘The Attitude Scale Towards Fourth- Grade Social Studies Course.’ The qualitative data were collected from 30 students through simple random sampling method. ‘Structured Interview Form’ was employed in order to collect qualitative data. Analysis of the quantitative data included simple linear regression while the analysis of qualitative data included content analysis. Results showed that social skills and students’ attitudes towards Social Studies courses were a low-level, significant and positive predictor of their academic achievement.
