Sound Absorption Property of Traditional Korean Natural Wallpaper (Hanji)

Abstract: The sound absorption property, hand feel, air permeability and pore size of 25 kinds of traditional Korean natural wallpapers (Hanji) were measured and analyzed in this study. The sound absorption rate of Hanji became larger with increasing of frequency beginning from 3.2 kHz, reached 2 times in frequency range of nearby 4 kHz. The sound absorption rate of Hanji was increased as the permeability was lowered and the pore size was decreased. The sound absorption property of Hanji wallpaper could be improved by m… Show more

“…According to ISO 11654 (1997), NRC grades are divided into 5 grades: below 0.10 is no grade, grade E is 0.15 to 0.25, grade D is 0.3 to 0.55, grade C is 0.60 to 0.75, grade B is 0.80 to 0.85, and grade A is 0.90 to 1.00 (Jang et al, 2018b;Kim and Lee, 2017). As a result of this study, all dimension of Hinoki cypress cubes show D grade, that it has a sound absorption function.…”

“…"Sound absorption" (164.6) was also ranked in the top 50. This is because studies have investigated the sound absorption performance in terms of the porosity of wood and natural resources such as forest byproducts as sound absorption materials (Jang, 2022a;Jang et al, 2018;Jung et al, 2021;Kang et al, 2019).…”

“…Pore size was measured by capillary flow porometry [32][33][34] using the standard method of ASTM F-316 [35]. This method's main characteristic is that it measures the constricted segments of only the through-pores to measure only the pores that affect permeability [25,31,[34][35][36][37][38][39]. The same equipment used for gas permeability was used to measure pore size.…”
