Source Finding in the Era of the SKA (Precursors): Aegean 2.0

Abstract: In the era of the SKA precursors, telescopes are producing deeper, larger images of the sky on increasingly small time-scales. The greater size and volume of images place an increased demand on the software that we use to create catalogues, and so our source finding algorithms need to evolve accordingly. In this paper we discuss some of the logistical and technical challenges that result from the increased size and volume of images that are to be analysed, and demonstrate how the Aegean source finding package … Show more

“…The ISS and satellites as distant as Alouette-2 appeared well above the side-lobe confusion noise in these channels (about 12 Jy), as shown in Figure 7 and Figure 8, respectively. BANE (part of AegeanTools) (Hancock et al, 2012(Hancock et al, , 2018 was used to perform background noise estimation and the calculation of flux densities (integrated intensities) from these images. The Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) power calculated for Alouette-2 was found to be about 11 µW(at a range of 2241 km), which is significantly higher than the power predicted (about 20 pW) for a 1 m diameter sphere using an XFdtd simulation in Tingay et al (2013b).…”

“…The work also used WSCLEAN (Offringa et al, 2014;Offringa & Smirnov, 2017) for making fits images and DS9 8 for visualization purposes. BANE (Hancock et al, 2012(Hancock et al, , 2018 was used for calculating the integrated flux densities and for performing noise estimations.…”

“…To examine the noise properties of the final mosaic we ran BANE (Hancock et al 2018) to produce a rms map. BANE produces an rms map by calculating statistics over a square region of the image, in this case 55 × 55 arcsec or 23 times the geometric mean of the restoring beam, and 14 times the beam in the Dec direction.…”

“…Candidate counterparts from an untargeted search of the S190814bv localisation region. Non-detections are denoted by 3σ upper-limits based on the local noise measured by BANE(Hancock et al 2018). The angular separation and redshift of the corresponding optical source are shown.…”
