Source‐Independent Passive Seismic Reverse‐Time Structure Imaging With Grouping Imaging Condition: Method and Application to Microseismic Events Induced by Hydraulic Fracturing

Abstract: Seismic imaging with active seismic sources can be used to image subsurface structures such as faults, fractures, and layer interfaces with higher resolutions than tomographic methods. However, for characterizing large‐scale three‐dimensional structures, oftentimes it is too expensive and thus impractical to conduct active seismic survey. Seismic imaging using passive sources has been used to image structures through the “pseudoactive” source imaging by assuming source information is known. However, in practic… Show more

“…for detecting the discontinuities through zero‐lag cross‐correlation between the P and S modes decomposed from the extrapolated vector fields (Lin et al., 2020; T. Zhu, 2019). The resulting band‐limited image I ( x ) robustly presents depth and topography of an interface but cannot provide correct amplitude for a quantitative characterization of the elastic discontinuities.…”

“…Among microseismic imaging methods based on the wave equation, Gajewski and Tessmer (2005) propose the time‐reversal imaging method by solving the wave equation given an input velocity model to track the earthquake location and perform focal mechanism inversion. Appropriate imaging conditions are critical factors affecting the accuracy and resolution of imaging results (Yuan et al ., 2020; Lin et al ., 2020). Besides, the low SNR of microseismic data makes it more demanding for imaging conditions.…”
