Source monitoring for actions in adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS)

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Source monitoring consists in identifying the origin of mental events. Recent research suggests that confusions over internally generated mental events may represent a cognitive marker for increased proneness to psychotic symptoms and disorders. We have examined source monitoring for actions in adolescents with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a neurogenetic disease associated with high rates of schizophrenia during adulthood, and expected to observe source monitoring deficits in comparison… Show more

“…We suggest that an impaired shift perspective and/or episodic memory dysfunctions might alter self-other distinction in hallucination-prone subjects. Consequently, the lack of reliable representations of the actions performed by others could account for SM action impairments previously observed by Larøi et al (2005) and Debbane et al (2008). Our results also argue in favor of a decreased salience toward others in the 22q11.2DS, as illustrated by the decreased activations in regions sustaining social cognition and episodic memory.…”

“…These two studies (Larøi et al, 2005; Debbane et al, 2008) highlight the impairments in offline SM for actions in two populations with hallucination-proneness. Their results might come from disturbances in how information is encoded between first-person perspective (1PP) and 3PP.…”

“…Our group has carried out two investigations examining the relationship between self-monitoring difficulties and schizotypy during adolescence (Debbané et al, 2008, 2009). In both studies, we observed a significant association between increased self-reported schizotypy and self-monitoring impairments, suggesting that metacognitive difficulties related to the self may underpin the early expression of risk for psychosis in adolescence.…”

“…Participants aged 18 years and older were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Disorders (SCID). Participants with 22q11DS underwent the Structured Interview of Prodromal Symptoms (SIPS) (McGlashan, 2001) to assess the full breath of prodromal signs of psychosis in this population (Debbané et al, 2008;Stoddard et al, 2010;Schneider et al, 2012). We followed the Criteria for Prodromal Syndromes (COPS 3.0) in identifying prodromal syndromes.…”
