Source of the aeolian sediments in the Yarlung Tsangpo valley and its potential dust contribution to adjacent oceans

Abstract: Surface sediments such as aeolian sand, loess/sandy loess, and fluvial/alluvial clastics are widespread in the Yarlung Tsangpo (YT) catchment and across the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, it is debated whether the source of the aeolian sediments is local or remote, involving transport across large regions, and whether the surface sediments, especially aeolian deposits, are a major source of global dust. Here, we use strontium-neodymium (Sr-Nd) isotopic analysis and modern observations of dust emissions to inve… Show more

“…Sun et al., 2007). The dust generated in the Yarlung Tsangpo valley has been traced as far as the Japan Sea and North Pacific Ocean (Ling et al., 2022), although the volume of dust emissions and the importance of Yarlung Tsangpo sediments as a subordinate additional source for other loess areas remain to be ascertained.…”

“…Loess, which is an excellent archive for the study of dust activity, is widely distributed in the southern TP, especially in the YTR valley. The loess in the YTR valley could have primarily been derived from nearby unconsolidated sediments from floodplains or dry riverbeds (Du et al., 2018; Liang et al., 2023; Ling et al., 2021, 2022; Sun et al., 2007; Wang et al., 2020; Zhang et al., 2021). During the past decades, accelerated mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C (Cheng, Yang, Long, Zhang, et al., 2023; Feng, Wang, et al., 2022; Kaiser, Opgenoorth, et al., 2009; Li et al., 2016; Zhang, Feng, et al., 2015) and quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques have been used to date the YTR loess (Cheng, Yang, Long, Song, Chen, et al., 2023; Cheng, Yang, Long, Zhang, et al., 2023; Gao et al., 2021, 2023; Kaiser, Lai, et al., 2009; Lai et al., 2009; Li et al., 2016; Ling et al., 2020, 2023; Pan et al., 2024; Sun et al., 2007; Yang et al., 2021, 2023; Zhang, Feng, et al., 2015).…”

“…The Nd isotopic composition of sediments is only affected by the parent rock lithology and is basically not affected by chemical weathering [158]. It is accepted that the difference of between-sample Nd isotopic ratios (εNd(0)) can be considered to be controlled by geological factors rather than experimental error only if the difference is greater than 1ε unit [157].…”
