Sources and Cycling of Particulate Organic Matter in Baffin Bay: A Multi-Isotope δ13C, δ15N, and Δ14C Approach

Abstract: The Canadian Arctic is warming three times faster than the rest of the planet. The impact of climate change on the Arctic carbon cycle, and in particular for Baffin Bay, remains poorly constrained. Sinking particulate organic matter (POMsink) is a key component of the biological carbon pump and provides a direct linkage between surface productivity and the preservation of carbon in marine sediments. While POMsink provides a rapid POM shunt to the deep ocean (days) the majority of marine POM is suspended (POMsu… Show more

“…AMS carbon isotope analysis has played an important role in the development and testing of models predicting sea-level rise and glacial isostatic adjustment [ 26 ], as the timing of the changes since the last glacial maximum (∼20 ka B.P.) matches well with the 5730 a half-life of 14 C. On-going studies of particulate organic matter in the water column [ 27 ] use stable 13 C and 15 N measurements as well as 14 C analysis to indicate the origin of the suspended fraction of this material. DeVernal et al [ 28 ] have used 14 C analysis of planktonic foraminifera in sediment cores collected along the Lomonosov Ridge to determine the periods of summer open water since the last glacial maximum.…”

“…In the photic zone, phytoplankton uses preferentially isotopically weak nitrogen ( 14 NO 3 − ). In addition, Fox and Walker [86] indicate that sinking particulate organic matter reaches the deep ocean within a few days in the Baffin Bay. We can consider that N is well preserved in surface sediments and that δ 15 N provides direct information on primary productivity and nutrient availability in the surface ocean.…”
