“…FAO/WHO developed the first definition for probiotics: “live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host” ( Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization, 2002 ). A probiotic strain should have the following characteristics to confer benefits to the host ( Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization, 2002 ; Hill et al, 2014 ; Nagpal et al, 2018 ; Binda et al, 2020 ; Kaur et al, 2021 ; Rastogi et al, 2021 ): (1) isolated from a human, (2) lacking in putative virulence genes, (3) sensitive to common antibiotics, (4) tolerant to GI conditions, (5) catalase-negative, (6) able to adhere to the intestinal epithelial membrane, (7) able to compete with native gut microbiota, and (8) able to directly or indirectly inhibit the growth and colonization of potentially pathogenic bacteria. Research into probiotics has quickly expanded, with over 32,000 articles being published between 2002 and 2021 using the term “probiotic,” but proving the health benefits of probiotics, such as improving gut health after the consumption of probiotics, is challenging.…”
