Sources of danger and prosperity in the Peruvian Andes: mobility in a powerful landscape

Abstract: This article argues for the importance of understanding questions of mobility in both ritual and cosmological senses. In the rural Andes, people negotiate their spatial situatedness through reciprocal means that they see as central for the fertility of the land and animals as well as for the well‐being of the community. The article discusses how this relational understanding of the powerful surroundings is reproduced or changed as people move to an urban context. It explores the extent to which the relationshi… Show more

If ‘there is ground for taking the house as a tool for analysis of the human soul’ (Bachelard, 1964: xxxi), then the acts through which the soul is laid bare are visible in house‐building rituals.…”

“…The special issue of Social Anthropology on de Certeau that hosted Mitchell's article also picks up on his analysis of walking specifically, although most of the contributors situate their work within the broader concepts of strategy and tactics. To illustrate the range of other recent work drawing on de Certeau, we have an analysis of place‐making through rural–urban mobility in the Andes (Odegaard ) and discussions of walking as a ‘tactical’ urban research methodology (Kuntz and Presnall ; Mitchell and Kelly ). In a range of work Jennie Middleton also explores the embodied geographies of urban walking.…”
