Sourcing Practice in Local Media: Diversity and Media Shadows

Local journalism has received increasing attention and recognition from scholars as well as in public and political debate. However, challenges and downsizing in media businesses raise concerns about blind spots, with possible impacts on diversity, local democracy and civic engagement. This article discusses the concept of blind spots and diversity, investigating trends and patterns in local and regional journalism based on a content analysis of 24 local and regional media sources in Norway.

The publication reflects on the role of the concept of publication in the conditions of the modern media market. In the conditions of the region, the project should be based on the needs and values of the target audience. The Omsk media resource Tramplin, which was born during the pandemic, is an example of a new conceptual solution. Omsk is known as a city with an “unstable” background mood, with a high migration outflow and a lack of a positive attitude towards the area of residence. In this situation, several enterprising creators decided to offer the market an alternative point of view on the space in which they live. Springboard Media is a resource about the love of the city, encouraging the reader to share this feeling. The concept of the publication resulted in a content strategy, which can be traced at the level of selection of facts, graphic and structural design of the resource. The developed content distribution system found support and response from readers. This is evidenced by the marketing audit of the resource, undertaken during the study, its results are presented in the publication. The emergence of such projects indicates a new stage in the development of regional journalism, which needs to correlate the values broadcast by the media.

This study examines the role of local media in fostering a sense of community belonging among readers in the Ecuadorian context, focusing on how geographical coverage, news sources, and covered themes reinforce community identity. Through content analysis of 17 local media outlets and 6356 news pieces, we investigate how these elements cohesively contribute to the construction of an interconnected community. The findings indicate that predominantly local and regional coverage, along with reliance on primary sources within the community and the prevalence of topics related to politics, sports, and culture, play pivotal roles in creating a shared community fabric. By contextualizing the importance of “glocalization” in journalism, the study demonstrates how local media act as a mirror to community realities and aspirations, promoting a sense of intersubjectivity, adaptability, and civic engagement. This work underscores the critical importance of local media in representing the diversity of reality, facilitating civic participation, and strengthening the social fabric within the local context.
