Sourcing the obsidian of prehistoric tools found in western Iran to southeastern Turkey: a case study for the sites of Eastern Chia Sabz and Chogha Ahovan

Abstract: In this paper the results of X-ray fluorescence and neutron activation analyses for 18 obsidian tools from the archaeo¬logical sites of Eastern Chia Sabz and Chogha Ahovan in western Iran are presented. The archaeological sites have materials dating from the Pre-pottery Neolithic and Chalcolithic to Uruk periods. The evidence supports our conclusion that most of the obsidian found on western Iranian sites came from sources located near Lake Van in southeastern Turkey. “…Nevertheless, the recurrent presence of artefacts that could not be attributed to any known obsidian source has raised the possibility of potential outcrops located in Northwestern Iran. The suggested location for these possible obsidian sources notably includes the Sahand and Sabalan areas (Abedi, 2015, Agha‐Aligol et al, 2015, Burney, 1964, Khademi Nadooshan et al, 2007, 2010, 2013, Khazaee et al, 2014). Recent studies have started to address these claims, identifying several outcrops of reasonable quality for knapping in the Urmiah lake (i.e., Leylan and Gonag Giran; Niknami et al, 2010) and Bostanabad regions (i.e., Tajaraq A and B; Abedi, Vosough, et al, 2018).…”
