South Florida Water Management District ambient pesticide monitoring network: 1992 to 2007

Abstract: The South Florida Water Management District has collected surface water and sediment samples for analysis of over 80 pesticides since 1992. Residues of atrazine and DDE-p,p(') are nearly ubiquitous throughout the sampling area. Surface water concentrations of atrazine at nine of 14 selected monitoring locations exhibited a downward trend and none of the detected concentrations exceeded established levels of concern. Seventy-five percent of the sampled locations had average sediment residues of DDE-p,p(') at le… Show more

“…The gate is typically closed thus flow and runoff from upstream areas are not common. Surface water samples were collected quarterly between 1992 and 2007 analyzed for suite of pesticides including α and β-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate (Pfeuffer, 2011;Rand et al, 2010). Detection frequencies for α-endosulfan, 45%; β-endosulfan,33%; and endosulfan sulfate, 74%, were high and at times total endosulfan concentration exceeded both the acute, 0.22 ug L −1 and chronic, 0.056 ug L −1 , water quality thresholds established for protection of freshwater organisms (Rand et al, 2010).…”

“…1). Environmental monitoring within HAA over the past two decades has documented the presence of endosulfan residues in surface water, sediment, and biota (Fulton et al, 2004;Harman-Fetcho et al, 2005;Pfeuffer, 2011;U.S.EPA, 2010a). Data have indicated potential for adverse ecological impact to freshwater and marine ecosystems (Fulton et al, 2004;Rand et al, 2010;Scott et al, 2002).…”

“…The SFWMD maintains a large pesticide monitoring program on these canals, and although glyphosate is the most used herbicide in Florida it is not included in that effort (Pfeuffer, 2011). Therefore, glyphosate and AMPA are potential candidates to be included in such monitoring programs, and a simple, sensitive analytical methodology would be a desirable tool to achieve this task in large regional efforts.…”
