“…Although we infer that the initiation of these crustal detachments was related to passive rifting, we note the similarities with the continentward-dipping detachments controlling the crustal-scale structure of the magmatic provinces in Greenland (e.g. Geoffroy et al, 2001). Furthermore, analogue modelling has indicated that asymmetric crustal extension is favoured when the main intrusive layer is located within the ductile lower crust , as is most likely the case in the Vøring area.…”

“…The seaward-dipping volcanic wedges exposed in West and East Greenland display significant syn-magmatic extension coeval with crustal flexuring (Nielsen, 1975;Myers, 1980;Karson and Brooks, 1999;Geoffroy et al, 1998aGeoffroy et al, , 1999Geoffroy et al, , 2001. The crustal extension is documented through observations of coast-parallel dyke swarms and continentwarddipping normal faults at all scales (Geoffroy, 2001).…”

“…A second eruption onshore West Greenland, represented by dike and sill complexes on Nuussuaq and Disko, was dated as 54.8G0.4 and 53.6G0.3 Ma by Storey et al (1998). Geoffroy et al (2001) dated five basaltic dikes on the south coast of Svartenhuk Halvø as 54.6G0.6 Ma. These dates are concurrent with chron 24r when the plates changed direction and the Ungava Fault Zone was created.…”

“…The first one, around 61.0 Ma, amounting to some 2 Mkm 3 in total volume, developed in western Greenland, southeastern Greenland (and possibly between the two below the ice), and northwest Britain (e.g., [43,68,104,172,173]). The second one (even larger) corresponds to breakup at 56 Ma and is found in both eastern Greenland and the Faroes, along part of the then nascent North Atlantic margin, but also in Baffin Bay west of Greenland [57,113]. The former shares the characteristics of many other provinces in having recorded few reversals and being confined in time to a total duration of the order of 1-2 Ma (note however that the volume estimate is subject to the presence of flood basalts below the ice sheet connecting the eastern-and western-coast outcrops, which is debated; Laurent Geoffroy, pers.…”
