The importance attached to sustainability was further indicated when the United Nations (UN) announced sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 2015. The goals underpin the agenda for action on people, planet and prosperity. For certain industries, achieving a more sustainable future is particularly challenging. Textile and apparel (T&A) is one such example. The multiple members in its global supply chain ensure it is notoriously complex. To its credit, the sector has made some progress in addressing the so-called triple bottom line. But growing emphasis on social and environmental issues as well as economic ones hasn't yet led to sustainability being attained. On the contrary, T&A remains associated with harming both society and the environment. Poor working conditions and child labor epitomize the former, whereas examples of the latter include carbon emissions, the depletion of natural resources and pollution caused by textile dying. These and other problems illustrate the scope of design, material sourcing, production and consumption to produce negative consequences for people and the environment.
