Soybean Seed Enrichment with Cobalt and Molybdenum as an Alternative to Conventional Seed Treatment

Abstract: Biological nitrogen fixation in soybean is enhanced when seed is treated with cobalt (Co) and molybdenum (Mo) prior to planting. In this study, our objective was to verify if Co and Mo application during the reproductive phase of the crop increases seed Co and Mo concentration without adverse effects on seed quality. Two experiments were conducted. First, we investigated foliar and soil Co and Mo application under greenhouse conditions. Next, we validated the results obtained in the first study. The treatments… Show more

“…Cobalt plays an important role in plant growth and development at low concentrations, but it disrupts many physiological, biochemical, and metabolic processes at higher concentrations (Akeel andJahan, 2020, Hu et al, 2021). In our study, lettuce plants were enriched with cobalt via foliar spraying since the foliar application of cobalt was more efficient than soil application (Abreu-Junior et al, 2023). The current study revealed that the foliar application of cobalt at 100 μM resulted in significant increases in leaf area, head fresh weight, leaf content of nitrogen and phosphorus, chlorophyll content, total soluble sugars, and free amino acids as compared to the control plants in both seasons.…”

“…Before sowing, as standard practice for soybean, the seeds were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium elkanii (SEMIA 5019) and B. japonicum (SEMIA 5079), followed by the application of cobalt and molybdenum at a dose of 2 mL per kg of seed (YaraVita CoMo, Yara International), to enhance the biological nitrogen fixation (Abreu‐Junior et al, 2023). Five seeds were sowed per pot and after 10 days of germination, thinning was performed, maintaining two plants per pot.…”

“…O principal problema do fornecimento via solo, no momento da semeadura, é a elevada imobilização desses elementos no solo, diminuindo dessa forma sua eficiência. Por outro lado, o fornecimento de micronutrientes como o molibdênio via semente reduz a nodulação e a eficiência da FBN, sendo dessa forma a melhor alternativa em frente a este problema a aplicação do mesmo via foliar (ABREU-JUNIOR et al, 2023).…”
