Space Interferometry Mission thermal design

Abstract: The Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) has some very tight stability requirements that drive the thermal control approach well beyond the traditional spacecraft thermal control regime. The precision support structure will be constructed of composite materials with a quite low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) on the order of 10 -7 /K. Even then, the temperature variations of the structure cannot exceed about 0.2°C. For the main optical elements, which will be fabricated of ultra-low expansion (ULE, 10 -8 … Show more

“…Cold-biasing involves providing extra cooling capacity to assure that the device always runs below its operating temperature, then adding extra heat as needed to warm the device to its required operating temperature. This can provide temperature control within 0.1 K or better, (Aaron et al, 2002) but at the expense of additional radiator area, additional power consumption for the heaters, and additional complexity in the form of redundant thermostats and heaters to prevent overcoohng due to a failure of the control system (Gasbarre et al, 2007). A Variable Conductance Heat Pipe (VCHP) is a conventional heat pipe with an added reservoir that contains a controlled amount of non-condensable gas.…”

“…This usually requires measuring instruments to be able to simultaneously measure roll angle, yaw angle, and pitch angle [4,5]. For example, the structural deformation of the antenna and star sensor bracket of the observation satellite and deep space exploration satellite can seriously affect their alignment accuracy [6][7][8]. To solve this problem, it is necessary to use a measuring instrument to simultaneously measure the 3-DOF angle information.…”

“…Structural deformation of a satellite is a crucial factor that affects its performance. Such deformations reduce the aiming accuracy of space satellites and even affect the normal functioning of the space-based radar (SBR) [1][2][3]. With the improvement of star trackers and satellite attitude control accuracy, the requirements for the determination of the accuracy of structural deformation of some special satellites have reached the level of several microradians [4][5][6].…”
