Spadicoides camelliae and Diplococcium livistonae, two new hyphomycetes on dead branches from Fujian Province, China

Abstract: Two new dematiaceous hyphomycetes, Spadicoides camelliae and Diplococcium livistonae, are described and illustrated based on specimens collected from the subtropical forests in Fujian Province, southeast China. They were collected on dead branches of Camellia japonica and Livistona chinensis, respectively. Spadicoides camelliae is characterized by polytretic, terminal conidiogenous cells with solitary, ovoid, versicolored, and mainly 2-septate conidia (15.0-22.0 9 7.0-10.0 lm). Diplococcium livistonae is disti… Show more

“…Análises moleculares sugerem que algumas espécies de Spadicoides estão filogeneticamente relacionadas com as classes Dothideomycetes e Sordariomycetes (Shenoy et al 2010), revelando a natureza polifilética do gênero. Conforme Ma et al (2012) atualmente são aceitas 33 espécies em Spadicoides. Spadicoides macrocontinua apresenta semelhanças com S. atra (Corda) S. Hughes e S. subsphaerica D.W. Li com relação aos conídios unicelulares.…”

“…Fungal members of other Leotiomycetes orders are also represented on palms, such as Chalara (Pezizellaceae, Rhytismatales), Dactylaria (Calloriaceae, Rhytismatales), Lophodermium (Rhytismataceae, Rhytismatales), Phacidium (Phacidiaceae, Phacidiales), and Phlyctema (Dermateaceae, Medeolariales), e.g., refs. [240,241,622,712,713]. However, considering the comprehensive review of literature carried out here, the great diversity of palmicolous ascomycetes is basically restricted to the subphylum Pezizomycotina.…”

“…The vegetation is mostly composed of evergreen broadleaf forests and rainforests in this marine monsoon zone. Fungal diversity in southern China is high, and more than 150 wood-inhabiting fungi have been recently discovered there (Dai et al 2009;Dai and Li 2010;Ma et al 2011Ma et al , 2012. Located in the south of China, Fujian, Yunnan, and Hainan Provinces cover an area of 570,000 km 2 and possess various plants, fungi, and other organisms owing to the warm moist climate.…”
