Spanish Validation of the Shorter Version of the Workplace Incivility Scale: An Employment Status Invariant Measure

Abstract: Workplace Incivility (WI) occurs worldwide and has negative consequences on individuals and organizations. Valid and comprehensive instruments have been used, specifically in English speaking countries, to measure such adverse process at work, but it is not available a validated instrument for research carried out in Spanish speaking countries. In this study we aim to test the psychometric properties of the Matthews and Ritter’s four-item Workplace Incivility Scale (2016) with Spanish workers (N = 407) from di… Show more

“…Similarly, the reliabilities obtained in this study for the variable, minimum statistics for Cronbach alpha reliability is 0.752 and for composite reliability is 0.846, which are well above the prescribed threshold in the literature. Further, the average variance extracted is reported to be above 0.5 ( Di Marco et al, 2018 ). The minimum value obtained in this study for AVE is 0.565.…”

“…The scale was developed using the measurement scales used in the previous studies for measuring the respective variables. The scale of three types of knowledge hiding, that is, evasive hiding, playing dumb, and rationalized hiding has been adapted from the study by Connelly and Zweig (2015) , PCB from study by Robinson and Morrison (2000) , and workplace incivility from study by Di Marco et al (2018) . The scale of three variables addressing knowledge hiding contained 4 items each, the PCB was measured with 5 items scale, and workplace incivility was measured with 4 items scale.…”

“…Another instrument that has the potential to help describe and assess the experiences and environments LGBTQIA athletic trainers work in is the Workplace Incivility Scale. This scale has been used across multiple industries and across the globe to determine whether or not an individual was working in a setting that would allow them to flourish [8][9][10][11]. In 2018, a shortened version of this scale was created and validated in order to create a more concise measure of incivility in the workplace [8].…”
