Snakebite envenomation is a serious public health concern in rural areas of Uganda. Snakebites are poorly documented in Uganda because most occur in rural settings where traditional therapists end up being the first-line defense for treatment. Ethnobotanical surveys in Uganda have reported that some plants are used to antagonize the activity of various snake venoms. This review was sought to identify antivenin plants in Uganda and some pharmacological evidence supporting their use. A literature survey done in multidisciplinary databases revealed that 77 plant species belonging to 65 genera and 42 families are used for the treatment of snakebites in Uganda. The majority of these species belong to family Fabaceae (31%), Euphorbiaceae (14%), Asteraceae (12%), Amaryllidaceae (10%) and Solanaceae (10%). The main growth habit of the species is shrubs (41%), trees (33%) and herbs (18%). Antivenin extracts are usually prepared from roots (54%) and leaves (23%) through decoctions, infusions, powders, and juices, and are administered orally (67%) or applied topically (17%). The most frequently encountered species were Allium cepa, Carica papaya, Securidaca longipedunculata, Harrisonia abyssinica, and Nicotiana tabacum. Species with global reports of tested antivenom activity included Allium cepa, Allium sativum, Basella alba, Capparis tomentosa, Carica papaya, Cassia occidentalis, Jatropa carcus, Vernonia cinereal, Bidens pilosa, Hoslundia opposita, Maytensus senegalensis, Securinega virosa, and Solanum incanum. There is need to identify and evaluate the antivenom compounds in the claimed plants.

Bronchial Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition of the lung airways resulting in episodic airflow obstruction. 1 the prevalence of Bronchial Asthma has increased continuously since the 1970s, and now affects an estimated 4 to 7% of the people worldwide. 2 Increase amount of pollution with stressful lifestyle changes are major factors for Bronchial Asthma. Ayurveda explained Tamaka Shwasa which is most comparable to Bronchial Asthma. Modern science has many medicine with proven immediate effect but also has significant amount of adverse effects. World is looking towards other alternatives system of medicine which are comparatively safer and has significantly better results. Study was undertaken to access the efficacy of Simhayadi Kwath along with Shati Churna in Tamaka Shwasa. The clinical trial was carried out from OPD and IPD of A & U Tibbia College and Hospital in Delhi on total of 30 patients. Patients were treated with Simhayadi Kwath 20 ml and Shati Churna 2.5 gm QID for 90 days. Data was statistically analyzed for biological parameters, symptomatic relief and pulmonary function parameters. A significant decrease in AEC, ESR and Serum IgE were observed. The study suggests that Simhayadi Kwath with Shati Churna can be used as an effective drug regimen for bronchial asthma.

Solanum incanum Linn. (Solanaceae) is a perennial bushy herb used to stained teeth among the Kanuri women and in making vegetable soups. This study determined proximate and elemental contents, phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activities of the fruit. The proximate analyses showed the presence of crude fibre, carbonhydrate and crude protein while the elemental analyses revealed the presence of magnesium, calcium and sodium. The fruit contains; saponins, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, cardenolite, glycosides, reducing sugars, phenolics content and flavonoids content. The results of antioxidant showed that the EC 50 values for DPPH radicals with aqueous and ethanol fruit extracts of the S. incanum Linn. were found to be 0.02488 and 0.1000 mg/ml, respectively. The aqueous extract showed EC 50 value lower than ethanol extract. In conclusion, this results suggested that aqueous extract of S. incanum Linn might contain more potential antioxidant compounds than ethanol extract.
