Spate Irrigation of Barley Through Floodwater Harvesting in the Gareh-Bygone Plain, Iran

Abstract: Utilizing passive floodwater for spate irrigation in arid areas is an opportunity to use marginal water for crop production. These techniques have only partially been studied in an extensive way. This paper describes a floodwater harvesting and spreading system for spate irrigation and field experiments for cultivation of barley. The field experiments were carried out during a three-year period. The area is noteworthy for its erratic and scarce rainfall. Due to the scarce and late rainfall, only in the second-… Show more

“…In principal, assuming the artificial recharge areas are the main source of GW recharge, extending the FWS systems together by decreasing the abstraction rate 25 seems to be a prominent and affordable solution to reverse the GW decline in the future. This can be accompanied by converting a part of irrigated land into the spate irrigation farming (Ghahari et al, 2014) GW maintenance. In this case, the impact of reduced pumping would be less on the livelihood of the settlers.…”

“…Thus, floodwater harvesting is a good solution for reducing flood risk and water scarcity in arid and semi-arid regions [2]. We can say that floodwater is the main source of surface water and groundwater for many arid and semi-arid regions [3] because it is needed to control and manage floodwater for later use. Besides the washing of agricultural land, soil erosion, and floods also contaminate drinking water sources by collapsing wells or leaking the pipes of the water supply system [4].…”

“…For modeling FWS suitability in this research, first, data on the current established FWS system, the Jamab system, were gathered [37]. Then, we defined the best locations for FWS establishment in the study area by considering the national guidelines and published documents [9,10,13,43]. To model FWS suitability, the main conditioning factors were used.…”
