During the last decade, an Indo-Pacific scyphomedusa, Rhopilema nomadica, penetrated the eastern Mediterranean. Annual blooms of the medusa near the Israeli coast were observed during the summer months of the years 1989 to 1992. R. nomadjca migrated northward from the Israeli coast towards Lebanon and Syria and has not been found elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Temperature dependence of the metamorphosis of R. nornadica polyps into strobila was studied in the laboratory. Rapid strobilation occurred between 18 and 20°C and a decline of strobilation was observed when the temperature was raised to 24 or 26OC. When water temperature was below 16"C, polyps did not strobilate, and below 13 "C, polyps did not feed, resulting in a gradual loss of polyp vitahty. Con~parison of the temperature regime in the Levant Basin and the dependence of polyp strobilat~on on temperature suggest that the spring rise in water temperature causes a rapid strobilation, whereas winter and summer water temperatures inhibit or diminish reproduction. Laboratory studies support the possibility that synchronization and annual occurrence of R. nomadica is controlled by seasonal changes in water temperature regimes, leading to rapid strobilation and release of ephyrae during springtime. The sensitivity of the polyps to low temperatures enables us to predict that the future dispersal of Rhopilerna nornadica may be limited to the eastern Mediterranean. This study emphasizes the importance of the effect of 1 abiotic factor on the physiology and the migration pattern of R. nomadica. This can be a good model for understanding the behavior and limiting factors of Indo-Pacific jellyfish migrating into non-tropical seas.

Seasonal variation of large medusae abundance and biomass was studied in the North Bay, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil (27°30'S, 48° 32'W), from February to December 2005. Collecting was conducted seasonally with the help of fishing bottom trawl in 30-minute sections (12 in summer, 18 in each of the remaining seasons) in six stations, totaling 66 samples. Eight species were found: the hydrozoans Aequorea sp., Olindias sambaquiensis Müller, 1861, and Rhacostoma atlantica L. Agassiz, 1850; the cubozoans Chiropsalmus quadrumanus (Müller, 1859) and Tamoya haplonema Müller, 1859, and the scyphozoans Aurelia sp., Chrysaora lactea Eschscholtz, 1829 and Lychnorhiza lucerna Haeckel, 1880. Capture rates were low, up to 38 indiv. ha-1, and only ~47% of the samples were positive for jellyfish, comprising 206 individuals. Medusae abundance and species richness clearly changed from one season to another, but did not vary between the sites. Higher species richness (7 out of 8) and greater abundances were recorded during the fall (~60% and 72% of all medusae individuals and biomass respectively). Specific frequency of capture varied from 1.5 to 29% and C. lactea was the only species found in more than 25% of the samples. The three most common species dominated in different periods of the year: C. lactea during fall (78% of individuals and 60% of biomass), R. atlantica during winter (90% of individuals and 17% of biomass), and O. sambaquiensis in spring (78% of individuals and 40% of biomass). Only two individuals were caught during summer, one C. lactea and one R. atlantica. The results offer a general picture of the distribution of the macromedusae in the North Bay, but a continuous monitoring is desirable for a more detailed knowledge on the jellyfish dynamics in the Brazilian coastal waters

Very large swarms of the red jellyfish Crambione mastigophora in north-western Australia disrupt swimming on tourist beaches causing economic impacts. In October 2012, jellyfish stranding on Cable Beach (density 2.20 ± 0.43 ind. m -2 ) was estimated at 52.8 million individuals or 14,172 t wet weight along 15 km of beach. Reports of strandings after this period and up to 250 km south of this location indicate even larger swarm biomass. Strandings of jellyfish were significantly associated with a 2-day lag in conditions of small tidal ranges (\5 m). More than 90% of strandings occurred 2 days after winds were blowing onshore, but with the small number of days when satellite wind data were available during the study period, this result was not statistically significant. Dedicated instrument measurements of meteorological parameters, rather than the indirect measures used in this study (satellite winds and modelled currents) may improve the predictability of such events and help authorities to plan for and manage swimming activity on beaches. We also show a high incidence of predation by C. mastigophora on bivalve larvae which may have a significant impact on the reproductive output of pearl oyster broodstock in the region.
