Spatial analysis of loess and loess-like sediments in the Weser-Aller catchment (Lower Saxony and Northern Hesse, NW Germany)

Abstract: Abstract. Show more

“…The maximum cold in central Europe is reported for the LGM (c. 20 ka), followed by a slight increase in temperatures during the interval 18-13 ka (Mol et al 2000). After the LGM arid conditions prevailed, resulting in the widespread deposition of aeolian loess, sand-sheets and dunes (Kasse 2002;Schokker & Koster 2004;Kasse et al 2007;Wagner 2011;Zieliń ski et al 2011).…”

“…In particular, absolute age determinations are scarce for aeolian sand-sheets. Sand-sheet deposition prevailed mainly in northern Germany, passing southwards into finer-grained loess (Wagner 2011). The grain size distribution indicates a dominance of westerly winds during the Early and Middle Pleniglacial, while the Late Pleniglacial was dominated by northwestern or northern winds in central Europe (Bokhorst et al 2011).…”

“…The Pleistocene succession (Fig. 2) comprises Elsterian and Saalian glacifluvial, glacilacustrine, and subglacial deposits, Holsteinian and Eemian lacustrine deposits, and Weichselian loess and solifluidal deposits (Urban et al, 1988(Urban et al, , 1991Mania, 1998Mania, , 2006Elsner, 2003;Wagner, 2011;Lang et al, 2012). In general, the age control of the Middle Pleistocene deposits in northern Germany is poor.…”
