Spatial and seasonal variations of organic carbon level in four major rivers in Korea

Abstract: Regionally the lowest average concentration of TOC was observed with 0.66 mg/L in Nakdong river, while the highest concentration of TOC was observed with 0.91 mg/L in Yeongsan river. The average concentration of TOC for national water quality monitoring site showed that the lowest average concentration of TOC was 1.58 mg/L in Han river, while the highest concentration of TOC was 3.37 mg/L in Yeongsan river. Seasonally, the average concentration of TOC at six upstream sites showed 0.

“…Monitoring the COD and TOC content is important in assessing the degree of water pollution with organic pollutants, these indicators providing information on the presence and rate at which organic pollutants affect the water body [19,20]. In the present study chemical oxygen demand ranged between 15.6 -26.8 mg O 2 /L (figure 2a).…”

“…In general, a strong correlation between BOD5 and COD may indicate an increase in biodegradable and non-biodegradable organic contaminants resulting from human activities (Lee et al 2016). In our study, although BOD5 and COD are not significantly correlated at 1% with most of the variables, these two parameters present a strong positive correlation between them (BOD5-COD correlation: rho = 0.81, 0.84, 0, 95 and 0.7, during the four seasons, i.e.…”
