Spatial and temporal distribution and abundance of two species of Persephona (Decapoda: Brachyura: Leucosiidae) on the southern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract: Spatial and temporal distribution and abundance of two species of Persephona (Decapoda: Brachyura: Leucosiidae) on the southern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Biota Neotropica. 19(1): e20180534. http://dx.Abstract: Crabs of the genus Persephona are intensely captured in shrimp fisheries as bycatch in the Cananéia region off the coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of Persephona punctata and Persephona mediterranea could provide information abo… Show more

“…According to the mean size (CL mm) from each sampling station, the largest F. brasiliensis individuals occurred in the Coastal Area (S1), where salinity values were higher, on average 34‰ (Perroca et al ., 2019), while the average sizes of F . paulensis were similar between regions.…”

This is related to the species' higher tolerance to lower salinities (Pérez-Fanfante, 1969;Iwai, 1973;Tsuzuki et al, 2000;Wasielesky, 2000;Costa et al, 2008), allowing sub-adult individuals of F. paulensis to remain in the inner areas of the Mar Pequeno for longer (S6 and S7), where salinity oscillates more due to the low depth and the influence of continental waters (Perroca et al, 2019).…”
