“…In addition, our study also indicated that the El Niño Modoki events have different influences on the interannual variability of SCHDE during the warm or cold phase. This is supported by Deng et al (), which indicated that the El Niño Modoki events strongly affected the changing patterns of seasonal drought in the Pearl River basin. Note that this study only focused on inter‐period coherence between SCHDE and ENSO and El Niño Modoki events.…”

“…The monthly EMI data were obtained from the Japan Agency for Marine Science and Technology (http://www.jamstec.go.jp/frcgc/research/d1/iod/enmodoki_home_s.html.en). The EMI has been used for analysing the influence of El Niño Modoki events on the variations of dryness/wetness over the Pearl River basin (Deng et al, ).…”

“…Mann‐Kendall (MK) trend test is used for trend detection in hydrometeorological records such as temperature, rainfall, evaporation, evapotranspiration, streamflow, and water quality . In addition, Şen_ITA is used by many researchers, which gives successful results to identify trend component in a given time series such as temperature, precipitation, water quality and relative humidity, solar radiation, streamflow, water level, evapotranspiration in the literature.…”

“…According to the results of the research, hydrological droughts have risen from the 1970s to 2010. This incremental trend was mainly due to the gradual reduction of hydrological droughts from the 1970s to the 1990s and its gradual escalation from 2000 to 2010.Deng, Chen [24] studied the spatial and temporal features including rainfall and drought effects based on temperature and precipitation data in 48 weather stations from 1959 to 2012 in the Pearl River Basin in China. The probable effect of events indicates that annual and seasonal rainfall has decreased slightly in most areas and annual and seasonal precipitation has decreased in some areas; monthly rainfall has irregular distribution, but no significant trends have been identified.…”
