Spatial and Temporal Diversity Patterns of Planktonic Rotifer Assemblages in Water Bodies of the Floodplain Gemenc (Duna‐Dráva National Park, Hungary)

Abstract: The Gemenc floodplain of the Danube possesses numerous side arms and backwaters. The aim of my study was to explore connections between hydrological events and diversity patterns of the planktonic rotifer assemblages of these water bodies. During the study period (2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008) 75 taxa of rotifers were found. Generally, the water bodies of the floodplain had more diverse rotifer assemblages than the main arm. At low and medium water levels diversity was highest in the parapotamal wa… Show more

“…Castro et al, (2005) and Buyurgam et al, (2010) opined that increase in temperature is always associated with high abundance and diversity of rotifers in aquatic ecosystems (Hensen et al, 2007;Shah and Pandit, 2013a). Positive correlation between temperature and the abundance of rotifers was also observed by many workers across the globe (Schӧll and Kiss, 2008;Sulehria et al, 2009a;2009b;Sulehria and Malik, 2012). Wheal animalcules showed a negative correlation with dissolved oxygen in the study.…”

“…In the conjunctive water bodies at the receding period, diverse microcrustacean assemblages occurred in the new habitats created by the flood with the dominance of tychoplanktonic species, especially cladocerans. Differences in S, H′ and population density values increased significantly, especially in case of rotifers (SCHÖLL, 2010). Based on quantitative zooplankton data the spatial comparison of different water bodies suggested that during the receding period significant differences evolved between the different water bodies.…”

“…Rotifers are able to endure a large range of temperatures. A number of studies are available that indicate a positive relationship between rotifers and temperature (Schöll and Kiss, 2008;Sulehria et al, 2009aSulehria et al, , 2009bSulehria and Malik, 2012; Figure 5). This association might possibly indicate that an increase in temperature increases the rate of population growth (Galkovskaya, 1987).…”
