Spatial and temporal movements in Pyrenean bearded vultures (Gypaetus barbatus): Integrating movement ecology into conservation practice

Abstract: Understanding the movement of threatened species is important if we are to optimize management and conservation actions. Here, we describe the age and sex specific spatial and temporal ranging patterns of 19 bearded vultures Gypaetus barbatus tracked with GPS technology. Our findings suggest that spatial asymmetries are a consequence of breeding status and age-classes. Territorial individuals exploited home ranges of about 50 km2, while non-territorial birds used areas of around 10 000 km2 (with no seasonal di… Show more

“…In our studied population, adult Bearded Vultures used the home‐range area intensively but relatively close to the nest locations, as indicated by the smaller home‐ranges but longer mean hourly distances moved. This pattern is similar to that found in other populations such as those in Spain and South Africa (Krüger et al , Margalida et al ). Non‐adult birds travelled longer distances during winter.…”

“…A detailed understanding of a species' movement ecology and behaviour in relation to biological and environmental factors is necessary to design and establish appropriate conservation management strategies (Morrison & Wood ). Although movement studies of the Bearded Vulture span more than three decades, they are limited to only a few mountain ranges in Europe and South Africa (Gavashelishvili & McGrady , Urios et al , Margalida et al , , Gil et al , Krüger et al , Reid et al ). Information on the movement ecology of vultures in the high‐elevation ranges of Asia is largely lacking (Alarcón & Lambertucci ).…”

“…Weather patterns determine the need for shelter and the accessibility of food resources (Tieleman & Williams 2000). In most organisms, home-range size is inversely related to the abundance of food (Margalida et al 2016).
