Spatial and Temporal Variability of Precipitation Complexity in Northeast Brazil

Abstract: In this work, we analyze the regularity of monthly rainfall temporal series during the period 1953 to 2012, recorded at 133 gauging stations in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. We use sample entropy method (SampEn), which is suitable for short and noisy data and recently attracted the attention of hydrologists as promising for rainfall studies. By comparing the SampEn values of the analyzed series, we find that for both the original and deseasonalized series entropy increases (regularity decreases… Show more

“…Additionally, all selected features were contributing factors to environmental quality. Antonio et al [50] conducted a study on climate change that analyzed in a generalizable use case the regularity of monthly rainfall timeseries during the period 1953 to 2012, recorded at 133 measuring stations well-distributed across the study area. They used the sample entropy (SampEn) method, by calculating SampEn values in 10 year sliding windows for the whole series and by applying statistical tests for two 30-year subperiods.…”

“…Research has demonstrated that extreme weather events in the Brazilian semiarid region are associated with the region's climatic characteristics and the variability of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, specifically after El Niño and La Niña events [10,13,14]. Studies like those by [12,15,16] showed that in Brazil's northeast region, which covers a large part of the country's semiarid region, there is an expected increase in extreme precipitation events during the rainy season, a pattern also observed during periods of rainfall deficit.…”
